NATHAN DAVIS

last man standing

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

Just another dark day, in another dark town,
He hides his eyes from the sun,
And joins the merry go round.
And the circus comes to town,
And it ends as it began
With the last man standing looking down
As she looks up at him.
She's a baby now,
He's gotta leave her again
And he just don't know how.
She's a baby now,
So he searches her eyes and pulls off his disguise
Long enough to say, "I love you, you gotta know that I do."

Just another long day
On a longer highway,
And everything that he sees just reminds him of her
And how he used to be.
But the circus comes to town,
And it ends as it began
With a lonely man standing in a life that's demanding—
The leader of the band.
She's a baby now,
He's gotta leave her again
And he just don't know how.
She's a baby now,
So he searches her eyes and pulls off his disguise
Long enough to say, "I love you, you gotta know I love you."

Just another dark day, in another dark town. . .

A song about his daughter, Nathan recorded this shortly before he died. He rarely performed it, and in fact, we only have one very poorly recorded video tape of him doing so. He is, of course, playing the piano.
