NATHAN DAVIS

decatur and rome

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

You say you don't want me around;
My moral standing has been lying down.
You say I am a fool to dream;
That everything I wanna be is not what it seems.
Oh you say the voices in my head
Are all the little nightmares I bring on myself;
But I say I'm not crying hard enough
To put those nightmares on a shelf.

But my angel says she's flying (to Boone Holly Show ) (away Live)
And she ain't going home;
And the earth has been shaking
'neath the feet of a poet in Nome;
and I'll be playing later on the corner of Decatur and Rome Avenue,
Singing the blues.

My conscience tells me that I'm wrong,
But all my conscience ever gave me was this song.
Oh and life has been too good to me
To die today the man I've always wished I'd be.
Oh, and you can say what you will,
I'm so tired of that confused look that's on your face;
Cause my guardian angel flew away today
without as much as an embrace.

But my angel says she's flying away
And she ain't going home;
And the earth has been shaking underneath my feet, and I feel like a low rolling stone.
If you see me later on the corner of Decatur and Rome Avenue,
Singing the blues,
Just remember we ain't got no more songs for you.

But my angel says she's flying away
And she ain't going home;
And the earth has been shaking underneath my feet, and I feel like a low rolling stone.
If you see me later on the corner of Decatur and Rome Avenue,
Singing the blues,
Just remember I ain't got no more words for you.

[Editor's note:] One of Nathan's most cryptic verses, people have asked over and over again what it means. Nathan refused to say most of the time, saying that it meant whatever the listener thought it meant.

To clear up some of the mystery, there is no such place in reality as the "corner of Decatur and Rome Avenue." One street is in New Orleans, the other in Memphis. The allusion is to the marriage of rock and the blues.

There are two angels; one is a woman (the immortal Holly), the other his "guardian angel" as invoked by his grandmother. He is really singing to the first of those angels.
